05 Jul DIGITAL AND REVIVAL RIGHTS
Piers Haggard attended the Opera Europa Conference in Bucharest last year, representing UK opera directors on a wide variety of issues. One is streaming rights. The Opera Platform is already streaming operas from all over Europe, on a non-commercial basis, but without making any payments,
SDUK has been working for some payment for these rights with the top UK opera agents over the last few months. We believe we may have succeeded, without endangering the streaming project, which we believe is good for the future of opera in Europe.
Other issues include the protection of our work. Opera directors must have major input into the process of shooting and editing their productions. They also need to receive royalties from eventual TV and DVD sales and repeats.
Then there are revival rights. The programme must always state who has actually directed any revival, to protect the reputation of the original director, and to benefit the CV of the less well known revival director.
